The course content is divided into six modules:

  • Getting Started

Module 1 - Getting Started

This module provides an introduction to the Internet and the WWW from the educational practitioner's perspective.
It poses questions and issues that face classroom teachers who wish to incorporate the Internet into their curriculum
It provides a brief review of browser and browsing basics.

Module 2 - Communicating

The Communication Module addresses various vehicles for communicating via the Internet, including electronic mail, discussion lists, discussion web boards, and conferencing.
Course participants will demonstrate their ability to use these communication tools and will propose a plan for incorporating communication tools into their curriculum.

Module 3 - Locating /Evaluating Internet Resources

This third module engages the learner in using a variety of search tools to locate information on the web.
It examines and categorizes several types of instructional resources that can enhance the K-12 classroom.
It provides an opportunity to use standard software to store, organize, manipulate, and export these resources as "hotlists."
The module ends with an investigation into the criteria for evaluating instructional web sites.

Module 4 - Researching

The lessons in this module address the issues of Information Literacy,
Problem Solving , and Using the Internet for Research in the Classroom.
Course participants will explore these topics, examine websites and resources that may facilitate teaching about effective use of the Internet as a source of information, and discuss strategies for incorporating these ideas into the existing curriculum.

Lesson 10 - Basic, Advanced & Original Research


Module 5 - Designing Web-Based Instructional Resources

This module focuses on the publication of instructional resources on the web.
Course participants will review basic design principles for effective web-based instruction.
They will design a basic form of web-based instruction through the Guided Web Page assignment.
Participants will engage in the production of a more complex design of web-based instruction that incorporates, collaboration, critical thinking, cross-disciplinary activities, and use of real world data through the WebQuest assignment.
Participants may examine free web-hosting sites.


This module includes:

Lesson 13 - Web Quests
Lesson 14 - Student Publishing

The final module allows the course participants to reflect on various topics that, as a result of incorporating the Internet into one's instruction, may have an impact in the classroom. These include

  • Assessment of Web-Based Learning
  • Legal & Ethical Issues and Privacy & Security
  • Changing Roles of Teachers, Students, and Administrators
  • Funding and Support for Internet-Based Learning

Students will prepare a staff development presentation focusing on one of these topics.
