Lesson 1 - Introduction to the Internet for Education
Objectives
- Identify and locate an ISP for access from school or home.
- List the hardware and software required to use the WWW and email services.
- Describe three classroom applications of the Internet specific to a grade level and/or discipline.
- Compare and contrast the classroom climate, organization, strategies, and teaching philosophies of an Internet-based approach to that of a more traditional approach in the K-12 setting.
- Participate in a brief discussion describing the Internet and differentiating it from the WWW. Describe how you use the Internet both personally and professionally, from home and from school.
- Briefly review the history of the Internet by visiting the website: Life on the Internet Net Timeline
- Evaluate the Sierra Multimedia Internet Guide as a potential classroom instructional or staff training resource.
- In a large group describe the required materials and their sources for accessing the Internet from home and school.
- Following a presentation on current use of the Internet in K-12 classrooms and viewing the videotape, Global Quest II: Teaching With the Internet , in small cooperative groups brainstorm ideas and summarize how the Internet is used in classrooms and how it may transform the teaching and learning process. Each group will select a different focus.

- Benefits to students, teachers, schools, community
- Teaching strategies that support web-based instruction
- Educational applications of teaching with the Internet
- Changes in teacher, student, administrator roles
- Teaching and learning philosophies and theories that support Internet-based instruction.
Each group will then record and present their summaries to the rest of the class.
